Gut Flora
Gut Flora, also known as Human Gastrointestinal Microbiota, are a range of organisms and bacteria which live inside the intestine and help to digest food. As well as assisting the digestion of foods, gut flora also help produce Vitamins B and K which assist in wound repair, bone health and cell function.
The gut flora in each individual is unique, however they all play an extremely important role in overall health. As well as assisting with digestion and vitamin production, these microbiotas also help fight off unhealthy microorganisms, working as a defence team to maintain a healthy digestive system and gut.
Over time your gut flora will adjust and change due to factors such as diet and age, so it is important to be aware of this and always try to maintain good gut health. Prebiotics and Probiotics are seen to provide beneficial support to our gut flora. Prebiotics act as a good food for the good bacteria in the gut, whereas Probiotics are live bacteria. With such a key role in the body, it is important to ensure your gut flora remain healthy and happy.
